United Way of Mid Coast Maine Joins United Week of Action Statewide Event June 21-25
This year, all nine United Ways of Maine are joining for a United Week of Action from June 21 through June 25. This will be a week of volunteer service opportunities where volunteers will participate in rallies, trainings, virtual service opportunities, and a Community Needs Drive benefitting local organizations.
“We serve such a unique role in our communities,” said Maria Hinteregger, Director of Community Impact, “and this United Week of Action is our chance to show how we accomplish our mission to mobilize the caring power of the community to the benefit of so many people in the Mid Coast region.”
One way that United Way is doing this is with their VolunteerME platform. This is an easy-to-use online resource that connects volunteers with opportunities at various organizations, who can advertise volunteer opportunities and events online locally and statewide at no cost. Volunteers can quickly browse or search for opportunities. When volunteers create an account, they can identify favorite causes and interests to get updates when opportunities become available. It makes volunteering easy.
The United Week of Action also includes a statewide Community Needs Drive on June 24 from 10am to 2pm. United Way of Mid Coast Maine volunteers will be collecting personal care products, food, and diapers at three locations. You can bring items to the United Way office at 34 Wing Farm Parkway, Flight Deck Brewing in Brunswick Landing, or to the Lincoln County Regional Planning Commission office on Route 1 in Wiscasset, across from Big Al’s. Suggested items to donate include canned food like soups and vegetables, dry goods like rice and beans, non-perishable foods including peanut butter and pasta meals, and diapers. Items collected will be donated to organizations in the Mid Coast region to benefit people in need.
For more details about the Community Needs Drive events visit the facebook.com/uwmcm/events. For a full listing of events across the state, many virtual, visit unitedwaysofmaine.org/week-of-action. To find a volunteer opportunity get started today at volunteer.uwmcm.org.

United Way of Mid Coast Maine Awards Funding to 36 Organizations
United Way of Mid Coast has awarded $760,210 to programs throughout the region for 2021-2022 fiscal year. Many of the organizations that will be receiving funding this year are long time partners of United Way of Mid Coast Maine, and the programs that are funded have a significant impact throughout Lincoln and Sagadahoc Counties, Brunswick, and Harpswell.
Awards were given to 45 programs at 36 agencies after applications were reviewed by volunteer community members who sit on fund distribution panels throughout the spring. The funds were distributed to agencies within four impact areas: $214,703 to Early Childhood, $152,480 to Healthcare & Safety, $218,746 to Healthy Community Connections and $174,281 to Meeting Basic Needs.
United Way will continue to fund programs like Prescription Assistance at Oasis, the SEARCH Program at Catholic Charities, and Community School and Site-Based Mentoring at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bath/Brunswick and Mid-Maine, along with many others. The Midcoast Youth Center will be receiving funding to continue the Merrymeeting Youth Homelessness Program that United Way helped with limited funding for the initiative for the last two years. Becoming a partner agency will help ensure the program’s success moving forward. A complete list of 2021-2022 partner agencies and their funded programs are posted on the United Way website.
The funding decisions were made by a diverse group of 37 volunteers. They reviewed dozens of applications and with the guidance of staff, the fund distribution panels made their funding recommendations to United Way’s Overview Committee, who presented it to the board. The funding was approved at the May board meeting. “These community members ensure the integrity of the process and make sure that each donor dollar is invested to have the maximum benefit in the community,” says Maria Hinteregger, Community Impact Director at United Way of Mid Coast Maine.

United Way Annual Meeting Elects Board Officers and Reviews 2020 Achievement
Pam Gerbi, retired early childhood educator, was elected Chair of United Way’s Board of Directors at the organization’s online Annual Meeting on Wednesday May 19. A resident of Brunswick, Gerbi acknowledged the hard work of the agencies and the organizations in this past year as they worked tirelessly to help the most vulnerable during this difficult time.
“It was very clear how far many of our neighbors are from financial stability,” Gerbi said. “I look forward to engaging with everyone about what’s next. I know many people in our communities want to be part of that action.”
In the virtual online annual meeting, outgoing Board Chair Mary Ellen Barnes of Lincoln County Regional Planning Commission also discussed the hard work of the past year, and its effect on essential workers: “Personal care workers, teachers, shipbuilders, grocery store workers, childcare workers, fast food employees, and delivery drivers all put themselves at risk to keep the rest of us safe and healthy and fed. We learned this year how essential they all really are.”
Barnes reported on United Way’s 2020 achievements, including the distribution of $261,623 to 56 organizations working on the frontlines during the Covid-19 pandemic to meet increased needs in the Mid Coast, giving help to more than 20,000 local people through 36 partner agencies, bringing over $670,000 in earned income and child care tax credits to local people through the CA$H Coalition, distributing 56,000 diapers to parents in need, raising more than $1.7 million in the annual campaign – more than what was raised in 2019 - and leveraging the efforts of volunteers at United Way and partner agencies. More information is in United Way’s Annual Report, available online at www.uwmcm.org/2020_Annual_Report.
The following people were elected or re-elected to United Way’s Board of Directors at the Annual Meeting: Sarah Foulger of Boothbay Harbor, Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel Merry, Gracie Ramos of LincolnHealth, Hannah Reese of Bowdoin College, Cathy Showalter of L.L. Nominated as Board officers along with the new Board Chair are Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel Merry as 1st Vice Chair, Coleen Farrell of Mid Coast Parkview Health as 2nd Vice Chair, and Sean Martin of Bath Savings Trust Company as Treasurer.
In presenting the Treasurer’s Report, Martin summarized the annual audit, and said: “I can assure everyone that United Way of Mid Coast Maine takes it role as steward of donor contributions very seriously.” Sean also welcomed Jennifer Lincoln, the new Director of Finance and Administration, and said goodbye to John Washburn who recently retired from that role after 13 years.
The Annual Meeting concluded with a viewing of a video of Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman’s poem, Live United, which she wrote for the United Way and its efforts during the Covid-19 pandemic. Click here to view this video.

Midcoast CA$H is open to new clients for FREE tax preparation
Bath, ME (March 3, 2021) – If your household made less than $57,000 in 2020, you may be eligible to get your income taxes prepared for free by IRS-certified volunteer tax preparers.
Midcoast CA$H, the free tax preparation service offered by United Way of Midcoast Maine, has teamed up with GetYourRefund to connect people to our IRS-certified volunteers working virtually. This year, because of Covid-19 restrictions, there are 2 options to file taxes with Midcoast CA$H, both of which are safe and secure and require no direct contact.
The first option, the fastest way for people to get their refund, starts by visiting www.getyourrefund.org/midcstme - a fast, reliable, and free service that connects users with Midcoast CA$H’s tax preparers. It is as simple as answering a series of questions, then using a cell phone or computer to upload documents for the tax preparers to review before filing. A recent CA$H client exclaimed “It’s so easy, I’m embarrassed!” after worrying it would be difficult to use the GetYourRefund website.
The second option is called Scan & Go for people without a cell phone or computer. By calling (207) 295-6340 clients will initiate the process and be sent an intake packet. All the forms needed to file the taxes can be taken to one of the Scan & Go sites in Brunswick, Topsham, or the multiple locations in Lincoln County. All the documents will be scanned into GetYourRefund for the clients and immediately returned to them.
Midcoast CA$H is part of the CA$H Maine initiative and this year’s tax preparation service supported by BIW, Bath Savings Institution, Bowdoin College, CEI, Davenport Trust, First Federal Savings & Loan, First National Bank, General Dynamics, John T. Gorman Foundation, IRS/VITA, Lincoln County Regional Planning Commission, Maine Women’s Fund, Midcoast Maine Community Action, New Ventures Maine, and Norway Savings.

United Way of Mid Coast Maine Holds Virtual Community Read Aloud
Bath, ME (March 2, 2021) – The United Way of Mid Coast Maine didn’t let a pandemic stop them from hosting the annual Community Read Aloud. Because of Covid-19 restrictions, the event could not run as usual, with volunteers going into classrooms throughout the area to share their favorite kids book with them. Instead, there was a mix of pre-recorded videos and online virtual meetings.
A YouTube playlist was put together with a dozen videos of various community member reading their favorite kid’s book. Volunteer readers included Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel Merry, Representative Denise Hepler, and Lois Skillings of Mid Coast – Park View Health. With an array of stories ranging from baby board books to chapter books, there is a video for every child to enjoy. United Way shared this playlist with more than 100 school and childcare centers throughout the region, as well as with the local children’s librarians.
More than a dozen volunteers offered to work out an online live readings with classrooms at Phippsburg Elementary, West Bath Elementary, and Williams-Cone School in Topsham. Long time United Way staff member Peter Lindsay had this to say about his experience during the Virtual Community Read Aloud: “I would have loved to have been there in person instead of on screen, but having said that, we had a good time! I read A Chair for My Mother, an old favorite, and Doggies, a counting board book by Sandra Boynton in which we all get to make the sounds of the different dogs. It is fun to do with a group!”
United Way of Mid Coast Maine understands that early exposure to books and language is positively linked with school readiness and adult literacy. Sharing stories, songs, and books with infants and young children help prepare children to learn to read and to succeed in school and beyond. Reading with young children also provides times for parents and child to bond, an important part of their growth and development. United Way of Mid Coast Maine will continue to offer this important event each year, hopefully getting the volunteers back into the classrooms next year. For now, people can watch the videos on the United Way of Mid Coast Maine YouTube page at www.youtube.com/channel/UCH5OluFj2h30zQWUvz6ybbQ.

NEWS CENTER MAINE HELPS TO RAISE NEARLY A HALF MILLION DOLLARS FOR HEATING ASSISTANCE IN MAINE
PROJECT HEAT TELETHON CONTINUES STATEWIDE SUCCESS
PORTLAND/BANGOR, ME -- NEWS CENTER Maine held its annual statewide Project Heat Telethon on January 28 to raise money in support of the Keep ME Warm Fund. In just one day the telethon secured more than $455,000.
Keep ME Warm is a partnership of the nine United Ways in Maine and ten Community Action Programs (CAPs). It is the only statewide program that provides emergency heating assistance and support to low-income households and local organizations throughout Maine.
Volunteers from all nine Maine United Ways, employees from Dead River Company and NEWS CENTER Maine all joined forces to answer calls virtually on a brisk snowy day.
For the second year, NEWS CENTER Maine’s Project Heat Power Hour was deployed. From noon to 1:00 p.m. telethon sponsor Dead River Company matched all donations up to $20,000. During the Power Hour viewers donated $105,428. Add the match from Dead River and $125,428 was donated in just one hour.
As of this writing, NEWS CENTER Maine’s 2021 Project Heat Telethon has accepted donations and pledges from individual donors and sponsors totaling $466,359. United Way anticipates funds will serve more than 2,000 households for heating assistance. That number is based on the current cost of $2.18 per gallon distributed by 100 gallons per household.
“All nine United Ways across Maine are extremely grateful for the ongoing support of NEWS CENTER Maine, Dead River Company, The Sam L. Cohen Foundation, and the over 4,000 donors who called or clicked through to the Project Heat telethon to pledge their support of our statewide emergency heating fund-- Keep ME Warm,” stated Liz Cotter Schlax, President and CEO of United Way of Greater Portland. “This is another heartwarming example of Mainers rising to meet the needs of their fellow Mainers. The Keep ME Warm fund is just one of the many ways United Ways in Maine are working to mobilize the caring power of our community to help children, individuals, and families thrive. Together, we are committed to helping our neighbors across the state recover and rebuild, creating a brighter future for everyone.”
Home heating costs are expected to grow this winter because people are continuing to shelter at home due to the pandemic. For many families, the added increase is an escalating concern. The reliance on oil to heat Maine homes makes the Project Heat Telethon vital to ensuring people can stay warm.

November 2020
Bath, ME (November 23, 2020) United Way of Mid Coast Maine’s fall campaign, despite running during a pandemic, successfully reached its $1,650,000 goal, according to a news release.
“The total results are $1,653,274,” said Bob McCue, who co-chaired the campaign with Barb McCue. “The generosity of Midcoast people, and the hard work of so many supporters and volunteers came through once again,” Bob McCue said. Barb McCue said that the announced results include additional giving expected before the end of the calendar year. “We need donations to keep coming,” she said. “We need to keep raising every dollar we can, so we can help all the people we can.”
With the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, some people were not able to give this year; however others who were able increased their donations significantly, according to the release. The traditional in-person workplace presentations also had to change.
The McCues announced the campaign’s results at an online gathering.
The Campaign Excellence Award went to FHC, Inc., in Bowdoin, which held a socially-distanced in-person rally for some of its employees and included employees working remotely and at other sites by teleconference. It raised over $102,000 in company and employee giving for United Way, and it was also praised for its many services to the community, including currently distributing Thanksgiving baskets to people in need.
Bath Iron Works employees received special thanks. “We can’t say enough, or thank you enough, for the enormous impact your generosity has on our community,” Barb McCue said. “No matter the challenges, once again you brought in incredible results.”
Stephanie Therrien led a team of volunteers in raising close to a half a million dollars for United Way.
Additional awards went to Hannaford (Commerce & Industry Division), Norway Savings Bank (Financial and Professional Firms Division), Mid Coast-Parkview Health (Health Care Division), and People Plus (Public Service Division). Other workplaces also had great success, including the Town of Topsham which had a renewed campaign raising over $5,000, Bath Savings Institution, L.L. Bean, LincolnHealth, Bowdoin College, Midcoast Federal Credit Union and Five County Credit Union.
United Way’s Volunteer of the Year Award went to Glenn Irish of Woodex Bearing in Georgetown, who acted as United Way’s ambassador at his workplace, collecting pledge cards and delivering them to United Way.
Donations are still be accepted by texting DONATE2UW to 41444, at uwmcm.org/donate, or via mail to United Way at 34 Wing Farm Parkway, Bath ME 04530.
United Way donations fund community initiatives and services at 37 local partner agencies that provide Midcoast people in need with food, shelter, prescription assistance, health care, volunteer matches for isolated seniors, Big Brothers and Big Sisters for adolescents, home visiting for new parents and child care, among other services.

Bath, ME (November 2, 2020) – United Way of Mid Coast Maine is wrapping its Annual Campaign on November 20. The monies raised will be critical to helping thousands of Mid Coast residents meet their most basic needs, be safe and healthy, and get children off to a good start in life. The Campaign’s goal is $1.65 million, and its theme is “Now More Than Ever.”
“With so many people struggling to make ends meet, we really need every person who is able to, to give to this campaign for our community,” said Barb McCue, who co-chairs the Campaign with her husband Bob McCue, both recently retired from Mid Coast-Parkview Health.
“Our United Way has introduced new strategies and technology during this pandemic to make it easy for people to give,” said Bob McCue. “For example, we encourage people to give securely and quickly right on their phone through United Way’s new Text-to-Give option.”
Everyone wishing to help can give immediately by texting DONATE2UW to 41444 or going online to www.uwmcm.org/donate.
United Way is also conducting its workplace campaigns differently this year during the pandemic. Unable to hold the usual workplace events and rallies, United Way launched a new online giving platform and individualized landing pages for some of its workplace partners. This blended technique has made it possible to still reach out to employee donors through videos and online meetings, thanks in large part to the Loaned Executives that have been on staff since September – Ryan Berard of Hannaford, Cindy Tucci of LL Bean, and Nina Bergendoff of FHC, Inc.
“The lives and well-being of more than 20,000 local people, helped by 37 United Way-funded local agencies, depend on what each of us does now,” said Barb McCue. “Now more than ever, we need to come together in helping our neighbors. Please give today, as we enter the Campaign’s final weeks.”
In addition to giving by text or online, donations can be sent to United Way at 34 Wing Farm Parkway, Bath ME, 04530.
