Join Us to Wish Barbara Reinertsen a Fond Farewell
As we close out the year, I want to thank you for all of your support not only over the past year, but over the past 30 years, my time at United Way of Mid Coast Maine.
I’m retiring now, and I’m so grateful for having had this career, in this Mid Coast community. I’m grateful for the generosity I’ve witnessed, the dedication of people who work every day helping others, and the commitment of people from all walks of life who do their best to help their neighbors and make this an even stronger community for all of us.
It’s a great thing to work with others toward a mission bigger than yourself: United Way’s mission to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of our communities. It’s what all of us – donors, volunteers, staff, partners – share. How lucky am I that it was my full-time job.
Shortly after starting to work here, I reflected that if you ever start getting discouraged about the human race, you should get involved in your local United Way. I believe that more strongly than ever. I’ve met the most wonderful, caring, smart, amazing people through this work. I could not begin to express the admiration, respect, and friendship I feel for you.
We have something very special here in Mid Coast Maine. We have people at nonprofit agencies and workplaces and health providers and local businesses, governments and schools who work together for the good of the community. We have people who know and trust each other, who are willing to try new things in new ways, as well as to sustain what is working and important. We have strong relationships and a strong sense of community here in Mid Coast Maine.
Together, with United Way, we’ve raised millions of dollars, mobilized people’s caring into effective action, supported a strong network of local nonprofits providing critical help, launched exciting initiatives for long-lasting change, elevated the importance of investing in early childhood, and, in the end, helped tens of thousands of local people to improved lives. I’m proud of the great results all of you have made possible.
And the work continues! You may have heard that United Way is trying to raise an additional $100,000 to make sure we can meet the needs of local people over the coming year. There’s no better time to give than right now. (Just go to www.uwmcm.org/donate or send a donation to 34 Wing Farm Parkway, Bath, ME 04530)
I’m excited about the future of this United Way. There will be change as we adapt to changing issues and technologies and demographics, but our mission remains constant as are our values: community, compassion, belonging, and action. I know that we have exactly the right team in place at United Way, Board and staff, to steer us confidently forward. An announcement will be made soon about my successor as executive director. The future is in good hands.
Thank you all so very, very much.
Gratefully,
Barbara Reinertsen
Dear Friends,
United Way of Mid Coast Maine’s Board of Directors would like to wish Barbara Reinertsen a fond farewell as she leaves a 30-year legacy of service to the organization and community.
We are fortunate to have had Barbara as Executive Director for the past twenty-three years. She joined United Way as Campaign and Communications Director in August of 1992 and became Executive Director in 1999. Since that time, she worked with the community to raise close to $60 million for the community.
Over the years, Barbara has worked alongside countless volunteers, workplace and non-profit partners, donors, leaders, community members, staff, and friends, to help United Way meet its mission: to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities. With a focus on giving kids the best start, building financial stability, and helping everyone live a long, healthy and connected life, Barbara’s caring and compassionate leadership has made an incredible difference for generations to come.
We wish Barbara all the best as she begins her next chapter.
Sincerely,
Joel Merry

United Way Campaign Celebration Held: Workplace Awards Given
Community Members asked to Contribute Final $100,000 to Meet Goal, Local Needs
United Way of Mid Coast Maine’s 2022 fall campaign was marked with many successes and tremendous volunteer and donor support, Campaign Chair Mara Pennell announced at the organization’s Finale celebration at Bowdoin College’s Moulton Union Wednesday.
The Campaign has raised $1,569,095, or 95% of Goal, announced Pennell, Vice President of Commercial Lending for Bath Savings. “We are so, so close to the Goal,” said Pennell. “These are challenging times and our community needs us. The campaign will continue.
“We are asking people throughout the Mid Coast to help all of us - our family members, friends, colleagues, neighbors, and community - by raising $100,000 by the end of the year. I know we can do it! I cannot wait to see what we can do when we put our community first!”
All residents who can are asked to give by going online at www.uwmcm.org/donate, texting DONATE2UW to 41444, or sending a donation to United Way at 34 Wing Farm Parkway, Bath, ME 04530.
Donations help Mid Coast people in need with food, shelter, fuel assistance, health care, volunteer matches for isolated seniors, Big Brothers and Big Sisters for adolescents, home visiting for new parents, high-quality child care, and much more. 36 local agencies rely on United Way funding, as well as initiatives such as 211 Maine, the Diaper Project, the CA$H Coalition, and more. More information on United Way’s results in improving lives can be found at www.uwmcm.org.
“It will take our entire community to meet the big goals United Way is working toward: giving children the best start in life, building financial stability, and helping all of us live the healthiest, most connected lives possible,” said Pennell in urging more people to contribute to the community effort.
Approximately 80 community leaders and volunteers attended the event celebrating the Campaign. Pennell and Board Chair Joel Merry thanked the volunteer Campaign Cabinet, Loaned Executives, Development Director Nicole Evans, and the rest of the United Way staff who organized and led the campaign. In addition to Pennell, members of the Campaign Cabinet include: Bob and Barb McCue of Brunswick, Karianne Merry of General Dynamics Bath Iron Works, Cindy Tucci and Tara McCannell of L.L.Bean, Steve Bailey of the Maine School Management Association, Patrick Manuel of RSU 1, Karry Kane of Norway Savings Bank, Barbara Tuttle of Bath Savings, Kelly Creamer of LincolnHealth, and Chris Szalay of SEARCH. This year’s Loaned Executives, who worked full-time on the campaign, include: Mike Cunningham of Hannaford, Kayla DeVito of L.L.Bean, and Tara McCannell of L.L.Bean.
AWARDS
Campaign awards were presented at the Finale, including the overall Campaign Excellence Award, which went to Hannaford. “Hannaford associates go above and beyond to ensure their local community gets the support it needs to thrive,” said Campaign Chair Pennell. “They have outstanding participation from individual associates, and stores hold incredible fun and engaging special events involving the whole community. United Way is honored to put Hannaford in the spotlight to celebrate all that you do – thank you!”
United Way’s Volunteer of the Year Award went to Megan Smith-Pinkham of Bath Savings. United Way Loaned Executives and staff nominated Megan for “the many years of service, leadership, and support you have provided to United Way, and to everyone we serve.” Megan has been a leader of the Bath Savings United Way team, running organized, engaging employee meetings, complete with special events, incentives, and refreshments, that have led to outstanding participation and last year’s Campaign Excellence Award. Megan has also participated in United Way’s fund distribution, and is always willing to help other workplaces, sharing best practices and ideas.
L.L.Bean and General Dynamics Bath Iron Works received Outstanding Organizational Support awards from United Way. “Thanks to their incredible leadership and understanding of what it takes to support our community, L.L.Bean provided the campaign with two incredible Loaned Executives, ensuring we had the capacity to run the 2022 Campaign, and also provided numerous campaign incentives that brought our community together,” said Pennell. “We cannot thank you enough for your generosity!”
General Dynamics Bath Iron Works, which runs by far the largest campaign for United Way, received the Outstanding Organizational Support Award for the incredible effort it makes to reach thousands of employees with the United Way message, including bringing United Way representatives into the shipyard to speak alongside BIW volunteers. Calling General Dynamics Bath Iron Works employees “the backbone” of United Way’s campaign, Pennell said “You have been, and continue to be by our side, shoulder-to-shoulder, to ensure United Way, our partners, and individuals and families across the Mid Coast and beyond, can thrive. We are forever grateful!” Together with retirees and the BIW corporate gift, BIW employees donated over $434,000 to the Campaign.
Campaign Division Awards went to Woodex Bearing Company and MECO Seals (Commerce & Industry Division), MSAD 75 Schools (Education Division), Wright-Pierce (Financial and Professional Firms Division), LincolnHealth (Health Care Division), and Coastal Kids Preschool in Damariscotta (Public Service Division). Additional great campaigns were held at Crooker Construction, Bowdoin College, RSU 1 and AOS 98-Boothbay Schools, the City of Bath, Morong Brunswick, and many other workplaces.
United Way’s mission is “to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities.” The Campaign theme this year was “You Belong. Let’s LIVE UNITED.” For more information, please visit www.uwmcm.org.

Agencies considering applying are strongly encouraged to contact United Way as soon as possible to go over eligibility requirements.
“United Way is open to new partnerships with agencies and programs that are making a real difference in the lives of people in Lincoln and Sagadahoc counties, Brunswick and Harpswell,” said Executive Director Barbara Reinertsen. “We have 36 excellent partner agencies now, and we know there is even more good work being done by others to meet current and future needs. We encourage interested agencies, of whatever size or age, to contact us and discuss potential shared goals and what we need for accountability to our donors.”
Organizations interested in applying for partnership should contact Maria Hinteregger, Director of Community Impact, at MariaH@uwmcm.org or (207) 443-9752, as soon as possible for further information and United Way’s Eligibility Application and Partnership Agreement. These applications must be completed and returned no later than noon, Wednesday, November 30, 2022. During this first step, volunteers review the financial reports and governance of the agency as a whole to make sure that United Way donors’ contributions would be used and accounted for responsibly.
If an agency is found to be eligible, it may then apply in February 2023 for program funding in one of United Way’s three focus areas.
United Way Fall Campaign Kicks Off! Members of Community Urged to Help Each Other
BATH, Maine (September 8, 2022) – United Way of Mid Coast Maine kicked off its 2022 annual Campaign for the community Thursday. The theme for this year’s campaign is “You Belong. Let’s LIVE UNITED.”
Campaign Chair Mara Pennell, Vice President of Commercial Lending for Bath Savings, said the message of belonging is important. “United Way works to advance the best start for children, financial stability, and healthy community connections for every single person in our communities,” said Pennell. “And United Way does this by enlisting the generosity and power of all of us – not just the wealthy, not just people in high positions, but all of us – to make life better for all of us.
“United Way is where everyone belongs.”
The Campaign goal is to raise $1,650,000 to improve people’s lives in Brunswick, Harpswell, Sagadahoc and Lincoln Counties. United Way supports creative initiatives and 36 local non-profit agencies that provide people with food, homelessness prevention, free clinics, prescription assistance, literacy, senior services, childcare, youth mentoring, and more. Last year over 20,000 Mid Coast residents were helped.
In early results, Pennell was especially pleased to announce a generous new corporate gift from SaviLinx on Brunswick Landing, a new employee campaign at Crooker that raised over $5,000, and increased giving among school employees at AOS 98 and RSU 1. United Way Board and Campaign Cabinet members, staff, and Loaned Executives united in giving over $35,000 to the Campaign. Sustained Givers at BIW who give 1% or more of their pay year in and year out, and some other individuals have already donated, as have corporate supporters Bank of America and Casco Bay Title. To date $80,000 has been raised, or 5% of the goal.
Pennell had a special message for people outside of workplaces, who may work from home, are in business for themselves, are retired or simply live here: “Your giving is absolutely critical to this Campaign for our community. You don’t need to wait to be asked – we’re asking now! You can call us, give online at uwmcm.org, text “DONATE2UW” to 41444, or send a donation to United Way at 34 Wing Farm Parkway, Bath. Thank you in advance! You’ll be helping your neighbors.”
The Kick-off celebration at the Bath Golf Club was sponsored by Mid Coast - Parkview Health. Mara Pennell introduced United Way’s Director of Development, Nicole Evans, new Fundraising and Communications Coordinator Claire Papell, and the Campaign volunteer “Cabinet.” Cabinet members include immediate past Chairs Bob and Barb McCue, BIW Chair Karianne Merry, Tara McCannell and Cindy Tucci of L.L.Bean, Steve Bailey of the Maine School Management Association, Patrick Manuel of RSU 1, Barbara Tuttle of Bath Savings, Karry Kane of Norway Savings Bank, Kelly Creamer of LincolnHealth, and Chris Szalay of SEARCH – Greater Bath and Lincoln County.
Three “Loaned Executives” who will work every day on the Campaign for the next 10 weeks were also introduced and thanked: Mike Cunningham of Hannaford, Kayla DeVito of L.L. Bean, and Tara McCannell, also loaned to United Way from L.L. Bean.
