Success By 6: Early Childhood
Public Education on Early Education
Newspaper Insert: Who Is Driving Your Economic Future?
In December 2008 and throughout 2009, this special report was distributed throughout the mid coast region in the local papers and as a handout in libraries, oganizations and businesses. Success By 6 plans to produce a new report for distribution in 2010!
The Times Record Series on Early Childhood
During the summer of 2008, The Times Record published a five-day
series on early childhood with the theme "Smart from the Start!" The five front-page
articles focused on:
Article 1: The vital
role of preschool in preparing a student for kindergarten.
Article 2: A peek into
the kindergarten screening process.
Article 3: How early
education success or failure translates to crime rates of
the future.
Article 4: Drawing a
link between early education and worker productivity.
Article 5: Analyzing state
and local efforts to bolster early childhood education.
This series was launched because of a commitment made by the volunteers serving on our United
Way's Success By 6: Early Childhood Council. Several of these volunteers attended the Governor's
Economic Summit on Early Childhood in November 2007 as part of a Mid Coast team.
One of the key
recommendations from this summit was to increase public awareness about the importance of the
early years on a child's development and on the economic future of Maine. The volunteers on
Success By 6 worked with The Times Record to develop this series as a first step toward increasing
public education on these issues.
