Ensuring the Safety of Vulnerable Neighbors
Caring for each other in challenging times.
Our communities face a significant challenge for the winter of 2008-2009. In each Mid Coast community there are people who will be vulnerable to the risks of a harsh economic climate. This population includes the elderly, the isolated, the disabled and others with special needs. The United Way of Mid Coast Maine, in conjunction with many social services agencies, civic groups, town governments, and caring individuals to mitigate this risk. A number of initiatives are underway or being considered. If you would like to help or have suggestions, please call Jim Peavey at the United Way, 443-9752. A self-assessment form regarding your readiness for winter challenges, along with area resources, has been prepared. Click here for Lincoln County and here for Sagadahoc County.

Daily Call Check-in Programs
Several towns now have call-in programs. Click here for details.
Warming Sites
Some towns are setting up warming sites to give folks a place to go during the day to reduce the heating costs for their homes. At the sites, people will be able to spend several hours, in a safe warm location, perhaps with some neighbors. The Boothbay Region has a program in place; click here for details. Other communities are looking into this as well.
