United Way of Mid Coast Maine serves Brunswick, Harpswell, Sagadahoc and Lincoln Counties. We also have a Knox County Fund, for people who wish to designate that area.
Throughout our communities, thousands of people are beneficiaries of United Way-funded programs. Thousands of people contribute to United Way, and thousands volunteer for us or our partner agencies.
United Way makes it easier for us to help each other, here at home. Local people on our volunteer committees and Board make all policy and funding decisions. 99% of contributions stay here -- only 1% goes to United Way of America, in return for a far greater value in training, sharing of best practices, communications, public service announcements on NFL broadcasts, etc.
We have our share of needs locally. 395 people stayed in the Tedford homeless shelters last year, and 949, including 251 families, had to be turned away for lack of space. 2,144 people went to Mid Coast Hunger Prevention's food pantry last year -- 33% of them children. An estimated 3700 local people have no health insurance and cannot afford it. Sexual Assault Support Services of Mid Coast Maine reported calls from 259 people last year, 65% of them from people between the ages of 11 and 21. As in most communities, we have a serious problem of domestic violence, and of alcohol and other substance abuse. Too many young people are turning to drugs, getting into trouble with the law, not succeeding in school, and not fulfilling their potential.
The good news is, we have a strong sense of community here in Mid Coast Maine, and very effective local agencies that successfully help area residents improve their lives. People help each other, volunteer, and reach out to people who are isolated. We have what many people are looking for.
In addition to a beautiful environment, we are fortunate to have many outstanding businesses, schools, health facilities, cultural organizations and recreational facilities right here in our community. The Southern Midcoast Maine Chamber's web site
www.midcoastmaine.com, has extensive information about our region.
